COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Powell man and a Grandview woman were named the champions of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon this year.
The event on Sunday brought 13,500 participants to downtown Columbus and raised more than $1 million for Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Twenty-four Nationwide Children’s Hospital Marathon Mile Champions and their families were stationed along 24 miles. This year, there was a champion at the start and finish line to send athletes on their way and welcome them back after their journey.
One mile, the “Angel Mile,” was dedicated to the angels of Nationwide Children’s who have already run their race.
At the lead in this year’s marathon was 25-year-old Jake Bertelsen, with a time of 2:17:08, and 44-year-old Christina Murphy, with a time of 2:41:31. Also first for participants in a wheelchair was Greg McCrabb, of Dublin, with a time of 2:23:47.
James Ngandu, 34, of Kenya, was back for his sixth straight win in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Half Marathon with a time of 1:04:06.
