COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two officers with the Columbus Division of Police were injured in a crash involving a disabled vehicle Tuesday night.
The police cruiser was heading west on Interstate 70 West, west of state Route 315, when it encountered a disabled vehicle that just lost a front wheel assembly.
Police said the cruiser was not able to stop in time and it struck the wheel which rolled into the first lane of travel.
The officers inside the cruiser were taken to Grant Medical Center to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. The officers were later released from the hospital.
The cruiser sustained damage and was towed away from the crash scene.
Police said the driver of the disabled vehicle had left the scene on foot and was taken into custody a short time later.
Jail records state that the suspect was charged with four counts of theft and one count of criminal trespassing – all misdemeanor charges that stemmed from a different incident.
Columbus police said other charges could be forthcoming as investigators review available video evidence.
The interstate was briefly shut down due to the crash but has since reopened.
