18-year-old's death ruled a homicide; prosecutor's office reviewing charges

Tyrek McClain, 18, was arrested and charged in connection to the shooting last year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Franklin County Coroner’s Office ruled the death of an 18-year-old man a homicide after he was shot in October 2023 and died nearly three months later.

The incident happened on Oct. 27, 2023, in the 500 block of Cline Street, near South High School. Police said officers were called to the scene on a report of a shooting, and when they arrived, they found Rahsaan Jackson suffering from a gunshot wound.

Jackson was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. On Jan. 18, he died of his injuries sustained in the shooting.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, the Homicide Unit has taken over the shooting investigation after the coroner’s office determined on April 4 that the cause of death for Jackson was a gunshot wound.

The case is now under review by the prosecutor's office for additional or upgraded charges for the suspect, 18-year-old Tyrek McClain.

McClain was arrested the day after the shooting and charged with felonious assault. He is currently being held at the Franklin County Jail.
