Police: 17-year-old suspect in custody after man killed in Delaware shooting

The suspect will be held at the Central Ohio Youth Center pending murder charges in the Delaware County Juvenile Court.

DELAWARE, Ohio — A man is dead and a 17-year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting in Delaware Friday evening, according to Chief of Police Adam Moore.

Officers with the Delaware Police Department were called to the first block of Ross Street on a report of a shooting just before 4 p.m.

Police found a man, identified as 37-year-old Alonzo Byrd, lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Byrd was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died of his injuries.

A 17-year-old suspect was located in the area shortly after the shooting and was taken into custody without incident.

He will be held at the Central Ohio Youth Center pending murder charges in the Delaware County Juvenile Court.

The investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of agents from the Delaware County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office.
