16-year-old suspect in fatal Columbus shooting ordered to remain in custody

His attorney asked for him to be released to Franklin County Children Services, but the judge decided to keep him in custody.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 16-year-old boy was ordered to stay in a juvenile detention center after he was arrested and charged in the shooting death of a 15-year-old Thursday evening.

The Columbus Division of Police responded to a condominium unit on the northeast side of the city around 9:30 p.m.

Officers found Micha Mobley suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the hospital an hour later.

The teen suspect is charged with reckless homicide.

10TV is not naming the suspect due to his age.

In court on Friday morning, prosecutors said there had been a warrant out for his arrest since June. He had previously been charged with felonious assault on a police officer and receiving stolen property.

His attorney asked for him to be released to Franklin County Children Services, but the judge decided to keep him in custody.

“Having had a warrant outstanding for months now also given the nature of the most recent charge, I have community safety concerns as well as the youth's reappearance at future court dates,” said Magistrate Zeboney N. Barranada.

Neighbors on Blendon Grove Way told 10TV they had concerns about the unit where the shooting occurred. They said they had called police to the unit on Sunday.

The suspect will be back in court on October 3.
