COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 13-year-old boy accused of stabbing another boy at a school bus stop near Hilliard had his first court hearing on Tuesday.
The reported stabbing happened around 7:20 a.m. on Monday in the area of Springdale Boulevard and Bathgate Street.
The injured teen was hospitalized and is expected to be OK.
The Franklin County Juvenile Court magistrate said the 13-year-old suspect was a threat to public safety and ordered him to stay in the juvenile intervention center until his next hearing.
His attorney waived his appearance in court.
“Parent's say he's an A to B student, football player. They said he follows all house rules. His father's in the military. Said they've experienced no behavioral issues leading up to this incident to give them concern,” said the child’s defense attorney in court, adding he has never been arrested.
“If anything he's always completed any of his chores at the house and is always on good behavior. They are kind of surprised at the allegations involved here,” the defense attorney said.
Meanwhile, Hilliard schools were back to normal on Tuesday. The stabbing prompted a search for the teen before his family found him and turned him into police.
The school district closed four nearby schools and put several others on lockdown during the search. Three police departments searched for five hours using canines and drones.
The suspect's next court appearance is scheduled for next week.
