WORTHINGTON, Ohio — A 12-year-old girl is celebrating three years in business.
SparkyCat Cosmetics, a brand founded during the pandemic, is the brainchild of Aubree Rizek, who decided to explore her passion for cosmetics. With her mother's help, they launched SparkyCat Cosmetics in October 2020.
Aubree said her mother inspired her love for cosmetics.
"I would always see my mom putting on makeup at her vanity," she said.
Her mother, Andrea Sherman, grew to love cosmetics when she realized eyeshadow could hide her trichotillomania, a disorder characterized by a constant urge to tug at or pull out one's hair or eyelashes.
"I was very insecure as a child, very very insecure, and so having makeup on my eyes made me feel like I was normal," Sherman said.
Aubree has curated a collection within the SparkyCat Cosmetics brand called House of Aubree. She's created eyeshadow palettes, selecting the colors and naming the shades. The brand's product line of eyeshadows, lipsticks and mascara is all sold online in Columbus.
"I know a lot of kids don't have this, so I'm very grateful," Aubree said.
Sherman said seeing Aubree's drive and success at a young age is inspiring.
"She's definitely my muse," She said. "When she came to me about this whole venture, she just kind of looked up at me and was like, 'you said you can do anything, mommy,' so I just had to walk my talk. As a parent, I wanted to show her as a little female that you can do anything."
