COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man was killed in a crash following a short police pursuit on the city's northeast side Wednesday evening, according to Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert.
Albert said officers were called to the area of East 23rd and Gladstone avenues, located in South Linden, at 6:21 p.m. on a report of a wanted felon in the area. The caller told dispatchers that a man who was driving in the area was wanted on a felonious assault charge in connection to a recent stabbing.
Officers were able to locate the man in the area of Cleveland and East 24th avenues where they turned on their lights and sirens to stop his vehicle, but Albert said the suspect put his car in reverse and struck the cruiser while attempting to drive away.
The man fled the area and at least two police cruisers began to pursue him.
At 6:25 p.m., Albert said that officers indicated that the suspect had lost control of his vehicle in the area of Medina and East 22nd avenues and struck a tree.
Albert said the man sustained critical injuries and was transported to Wexner Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead at 7:06 p.m.
Columbus police contacted the Ohio State Highway Patrol to complete the accident investigation.
