COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man was hospitalized after he was shot by an officer while fleeing from a traffic stop in southeast Columbus Sunday afternoon, police said.
According to a statement from the Columbus Division of Police, officers attempted to make a traffic stop around 3 p.m. in the 1000 block of Wilson Avenue.
Police said the driver, identified as 66-year-old Michael Cleveland, reportedly ran from the scene which led to a chase. An officer discharged their firearm, striking Cleveland.
Police identified the officer as Joshua Ohlinger, a five-year veteran of the division.
Officers at the scene then rendered aid and he was taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment. His condition was described as stable.
According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Cleveland exited the vehicle in possession of a handgun.
No officers were injured in the shooting, a spokesperson from Attorney General Dave Yost's office said.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirmed to 10TV that agents were called to investigate the shooting.
Sergeant David Scarpitti said a firearm was recovered from the scene. Cleveland has been charged with having weapons while under disability.
