COLUMBUS, Ohio — One person is in custody following a break-in at a house in the Hilltop neighborhood on Tuesday, police said.

Around 5:20 a.m., officers with the Columbus Division of Police received a report of someone attempting to break into a boarded-up house in the 40 block of South Burgess Avenue. The report also stated that banging noises could be heard from inside.

Officers arrived at the house and made contact with one of the individuals. Police said at some point during the investigation, one of the officers fired their weapon. No one was injured, but police did not clarify whether it was fired intentionally or accidentally.

Brian Steel, the president of the Columbus chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, said the critical incident response team was called to the scene. The team is called if a suspect is not struck by gunfire or if an officer accidentally discharged their weapon, according to Steel.

Additional information on the situation was not immediately available.

Columbus police homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
