The Hamilton Township High School football team will play for area service members on Friday.
His students know him as Mr. O’Brien, but on Friday he will go by Master Sgt. Corey O’Brien, 10TV’s Kurt Ludlow reported.
“Between myself, my father and my grandfather we have 56 years of military service,” said O’Brien. “It covers World War II, the Korean Conflict, as well as Vietnam and the Gulf War.”
O’Brien, and every other military veteran is being honored by the Hamilton Township High School in a ceremony at Friday’s football game, Ludlow reported.
The ceremony will feature the marching band with a special halftime show.
The real celebration will be on the field where football players and cheerleaders are wearing camouflage gear, the school’s Ranger logo on one arm and the American flag on the other, Ludlow reported.
“I have two grandparents who are in the military and I just know the things they did,” said football player Cole Freshkorn. “I’ll never come close to the things they did for our country and our nation. So to just honor them tonight for four hours is just awesome.”
Cheerleader Hannah Sewell agreed. “Both of my grandfathers served in the military,” Sewell said. “One passed away a few years back. So I’m walking in honor of him. And my little sister’s walking with my other grandfather and grandmother who also served, so that’s very special for us.”
O’Brien has served nine years in the United States National Guard, which has included two deployments overseas, Ludlow reported.
He said being honored by his school, with other military men and women, fills him with a different sort of pride.
“It’s very heartwarming. Especially as a soldier and a father of four I love getting that thanks,” said O’Brien.
