Gahanna Mayoral Joseph Gergley has posted a statement on his Facebook campaign page addressing recent stories that uncovered questionable social media posts from his past.
Gergley said that some of his social media posts from high school and college are insensitive when read out of context.
“Hypothetical or not, fictional characters or not, sarcastic or not, high school and college years or not, they are unacceptable and I deeply apologize,” he said. “I am truly sorry.”
He added that people who know him will know the posts don’t represent who he is and he would gladly speak with anyone in Gahanna to address the issue.
Gergley even addressed other social media users about learning a lesson from the recent stories.
“Whether you have 50 followers or 5,000, your posts on social media can reach inadvertent audiences and have unintended consequences for decades to come,” he said. “Whether said in jest or not, some things just shouldn’t be said at all.”
He closed the statement thanking his supporters for their efforts throughout the process.
