Future Of 740 Area Code In Doubt As Numbers Run Out

If you currently have a 740 area code, it could change in the near future. Find out more.

If your phone number has a 740 area code, it could be changing.

The 740 area code is projected to run out of available phone numbers by early 2015.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is considering two different options that would change how customers in central and southeast Ohio make phone calls.

The options include what's called an overlay or a split.

In an overlay, everyone would keep their current 740 number, but would require you to dial the area code, plus the phone number -- even for local calls.

New customers would receive the new area code.

Under a split, seven-digit dialing of local calls would remain the same, but would require half of land line and cell phone customers in the area to change their telephone numbers.

The PUCO said the 740 area code is now projected to run out sooner than predicted -- sometime in the second quarter of 2015.

"Say you're at the gas station, you're paying with your credit card, the Quick Mart, you pay with your credit card - that's tied to a phone number. And the more of those we have, the quicker our area codes are exhausted," said PUCO Office of Public Affairs Director Holly Karg.

If you have a 740 area code, the PUCO wants to hear from you.
