Tom Moody, who served as the city's 44th mayor, died of natural causes Thursday night atRiverside Methodist Hospital. He was 78.
Moody served as mayor from 1972 to 1984. During his time in office, the city's freewaysystem underwent expansion and the downtown skyline grew significantly, with the development of theHuntington Center, One Nationwide Plaza and the AEP Building.
Mayor Michael Coleman issued a statement Thursday night after learning of Moody's death.
"I had a lot of admiration for Mayor Moody," Coleman said. "He was a man of great character. Hehad a great mind and great spirit. He did a lot of great things for the community, and he loved thecity of Columbus."
Last June, the city broke ground on a new neighborhood policing center near The Ohio StateUniversity campus. A dedication ceremony to name the center in Moody's honor was ironicallyscheduled for Friday, 10TV News reported.
That ceremony will go on as planned, the city said.
