A former swimming coach who admitted to having sex with a student was sentenced to five years inprison on Friday.
Kevin Chapman pleaded guilty in May to sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor,10TV's Cara Connelly reported.
In court, the former student talked about years of depression and anxiety that she has enduredbecause of Chapman's abuse.
The victim, who requested anonymity, said it took her more than ten years to come forwardbecause Chapman, 51, was her coach and a close family friend. She said she feared people wouldblame her, Connelly reported.
A counselor encouraged the victim to come forward.
"She told me basically that I had been raped and molested repeatedly," the victim said. "Weagreed that it was my civic duty to report it to the police even though nothing may come of myreport. Even after I talked to the police, I felt guilty for ruining Chapman's life."
Before he was sentenced, Chapman apologized to the victim and her entire family.
