COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University is in the next stages of developing its newest innovation district on the main campus.

The Ohio State Board of Trustees is expected to vote on several steps on Nov. 20 for the Carmenton District, a community being built on the west side of campus.

The Carmenton District is one of six districts under the university’s Framework 3.0 master plan as the campus looks to transform over the next several decades.

According to Ohio State, the innovation district will be home to new collaborations between public, private and nonprofit sectors. Some of the facilities being established in the area are:

  • Pelotonia Research Center
  • Central Ohio’s first proton therapy treatment, housed in an advanced outpatient cancer center
  • A research lab that will accelerate the development of new battery cell materials
  • Energy Advancement and Innovation Center
  • Andelyn Biosciences, a developer and manufacturer of gene therapies

Carmenton will also include residential areas, green spaces, connector trails, restaurants and entertainment venues.

As of November, $900 million of public and private investment has been put into Carmenton with more than 350 acres of land being reimagined for development.

On Nov. 20, the board will decide on a master agreement that Ohio State will join between the school-affiliated Science and Technology Campus Corporation (SciTech() and global real estate company Tishman Speyer to develop the next phase of Carmenton.

“This agreement between Ohio State, SciTech and Tishman Speyer is the next step in the creation of an innovation district unlike any other,” said Amanda Hoffsis, president of SciTech. “We have very high expectations for Carmenton and its long-term impact on the city of Columbus, the state of Ohio and the region. As a renowned and globally recognized developer, we believe Tishman Speyer is the right partner to help deliver on the vision.”

If the agreement is approved, the university and its partners will begin working on the next phase.
