Demolition work on the one million gallon Post Road water tower started on Monday.
Workers began dismantling the tower at about 9 a.m., 10TV News reported.
According to the city, the water tower was no longer needed.
The dismantling will involve a shutdown of state Route 161 when the tank is tipped over. According to the city, signs will were posted on S.R. 161, Industrial Parkway and Eiterman Road specifying the closure time.
According to city officials, because of safety concerns, anyone not associated with the project should remain outside the area during the project.
Crews planned to take the tower apart piece-by-piece and the steel was to be taken to a scrap yard.
