Diocese: Marion Catholic High School To Close

The Catholic Diocese of Columbus says Marion Catholic Senior High School will close at the end of the year.

Officials say the decision was made due to declining enrollment and financial concerns.

Jodi Aurigemma’s daughter was hoping to graduate from the high school.

“Our oldest is supposed to be a senior next year she's heartbroken we were all up all day crying last night”, she said. “It's sad for the community it's sad for the families there's a lot of emotion right now”

In a letter to school families, Bishop Frederick F. Campbell said it was a difficult decision but the "only responsible one to make."

“While the quality of both academics and religious education delivered at the school remains high, we also need to consider, over and above the financial imperatives, the quality of the overall student experience,” Campbell said. “With such a limited number of students, it becomes impossible to provide them with many of the extra-curricular activities and programs that compose a well-rounded student life.”

The Diocese said that options for utilizing the Marion Catholic campus and the nearby St. Mary Elementary School are currently being considered.
