Danville community honors officer killed in the line of duty

Officer Cottrell was remembered with a memorial outside of the police department where he worked and where his life ended.

One year to the day that a Danville police officer was killed, the woman who calls officer Tom Cottrell her soulmate said the pain is still fresh.

Officer Cottrell was remembered throughout the evening of the anniversary of his death, ending with a memorial outside of the police department where he worked and where his life ended.

Tanya Elliott says she has some good days but the last year without her boyfriend, Danville Police Officer Tom Cottrell has been unbearable.

“He was my support, my rock, my encourager. If I was having a bad day he would do whatever he could and he would do it for everybody,” she said.

Tuesday night, ‘everybody’ in this small town of about 1,000 people came together for Cottrell at Danville High School where Elliott is a school nurse.

Proceeds from a 50/50 raffle at a Danville /East Knox basketball game will go toward a scholarship in Cottrell's honor.

After the game mourners walked to Danville's Municipal building, lit candles in Cottrell's honor and held a moment of silence.

“We got to keep pushing his name. Keep him alive because somebody as great as him shouldn't be forgotten,” she said.
