Troopers to adopt dog found tied to guardrail on Connecticut highway

The young male German Shepherd was named Route after being located on the side of the highway by troopers.

NAUGATUCK, Conn. — Connecticut State Police are in the process of adopting a dog found tied to a guardrail on Route 8 in Naugatuck Sunday evening.

The young male German Shepherd was named Route after being located on the side of the highway by state police troopers.

After receiving a call from a woman who spotted the dog while driving along Route 8 Sunday, Troopers from Troop I in Bethany found Route tied to a barrier with a rope and a prong collar on the side of the highway.

Jessica Moffo, chief animal control officer of Woodbridge Animal Control, said the facility got a call at 10:25 p.m. from Troop I about Route and responded to the scene.

Moffo said that Route was "very emaciated" and "skinny" with "ribs protruding, hips protruding, spine protruding and definitely has some health concerns." State police also noted that the dog was malnourished and without tags.

No witnesses were found at the scene, state police said.

Route was taken to the Woodbridge Regional Animal Control facility and was later brought to the vet, according to Moffo. Burns on his paws were found from the hot pavement on the highway, as well as a possible road rash on his belly.

All tests for viruses came back clear, Moffo said.
