WHITEHALL, Ohio — An ATM theft from late March landed a thief with more than a quarter of a million dollars, but not for long.
The theft happened at the US Bank at Hamilton Road and Main Street on March 25. During a cash drop by ATM Solutions at the bank, a dark gray Nissan Altima drove up, a person got out and took the bag of cash. That bag contained around $262,000.
Whitehall police started their investigation into the incident. Detectives were able to track the car down using local surveillance cameras and the city’s Flock cameras. The car was captured on camera coming into the city without any plates but was later captured with Texas plates.
Police arrested and charged Dexter Narcisse, of Texas, with the crime on March 28, three days after the original crime. That case in municipal court has been dismissed but is expected to continue in the common pleas. Police were able to recover around $90,000 during the arrest.
Whitehall Detective Jason Kubinski said the poor tint job on the car was a defining feature. The rear window tint was pocked with air bubbled and didn’t cover the entirety of the glass.
“It was actually modifications to his car that did him in eventually. It’s just one of those things that if you do stuff to your cars, we will end up finding you,” said Detective Kubinski. “We tracked that by the process of eliminating its movements through local businesses surveillance cameras to pinpoint exactly where it went. When the tag got put back on and where it got put back on.”
Whitehall police executed a search warrant Tuesday afternoon at the Hamilton Crossing Apartment Complex to obtain surveillance video that might show the Nissan Altima. The search warrant affidavit explains that this complex is where detectives believe the rear license plate was put back on the vehicle. The reasoning being that there is a two-minute window from the time where Narcisse’s phone connected to the complex’s Wi-Fi and the time it was captured on the Flock cameras near the complex’s intersection.
The investigation into the crime and if there are any other people involved is still ongoing.
