COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder in a fatal shooting in Weinland Park Monday night.
Daveon Murphy was arrested by the Columbus Division of Police on Tuesday and is being held in the Franklin County jail. He is accused in the shooting death of 20-year-old Anthony Wise.
Just before 8:30 p.m., officers were called to the 1200 block of North 4th Street, near Weinland Park Elementary School, on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Wise suffering from a gunshot wound.
Medics transported Wise to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where he later died.
Investigators say Wise and a group of friends were gathered in the Weinland Park shelter house when Murphy pulled out a gun and began to fire when Wise was struck. Court records say the shooting stemmed from an altercation.
Police said after the shooting, witnesses and the suspect fled into the surrounding neighborhood. Investigators interviewed the witnesses and reviewed video and identified Murphy as the suspect.
Murphy is scheduled to be arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court at 9 a.m.
