Police: Suspect in Pennsylvania homicide dead after pursuit in Marysville

Marysville Police Chief Tony Brooks said that shortly after 2 p.m., officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle on the east side of the city.

MARYSVILLE, Ohio — A suspect wanted in a Pennsylvania homicide is dead and another person is in custody after a vehicle pursuit in Marysville Thursday afternoon, police said.

Marysville Police Chief Tony Brooks said that shortly after 2 p.m., officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle on the east side of the city. Officers were able to locate the vehicle and initiate a traffic stop along 5th Street, but the vehicle fled.

Brooks said the vehicle continued at a high speed and officers lost sight of it. Once they relocated the vehicle, officers successfully deployed stop sticks but the driver continued on before eventually stopping along Bear Swamp Road.

The occupants in the vehicle exited and fled on foot. Shortly after, officers were able to locate the front-seat passenger, identified as 25-year-old Joshua Marquez, lying in tall weeds a short distance from the road. He was taken into custody without incident and later taken to a local hospital due to a medical issue.

Approximately 30 yards away, officers found the driver, identified as 19-year-old Sean Hughes, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. First aid was administered but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brooks said that they believe a woman was also in the vehicle but fled before police arrived.

Police were made aware during the pursuit that Hughes was wanted in connection to a homicide in Pennsylvania and to consider him armed and dangerous. Hughes was a person of interest in the murder of a 14-year-old and the wounding of a 17-year-old and 19-year-old on Oct. 31 in Bensalem Township, located just north of Philadelphia.

Marquez was arrested Friday for having weapons while under disability after it was discovered that he had a handgun during the pursuit but discarded it nearby where the chase ended.

Marysville police are working with the Pennsylvania agency handling that homicide case.

The stolen vehicle and other evidence found is being held for the investigation which is ongoing. Police said that any additional charges will be forthcoming.
