Suspect in Blendon Township shooting confessed to crime in 911 calls

Rodney Perry, 29, was charged with murder for allegedly shooting 24-year-old Amara Jones in the parking lot of the Sunbury Plaza on Tuesday.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — Multiple 911 calls reveal a man, who is accused of fatally shooting a woman in a shopping center parking lot, made calls to police where he admitted to shooting her.

Rodney Perry, 29, was charged with murder for allegedly shooting 24-year-old Amara Jones in the parking lot of the Sunbury Plaza on Tuesday.

Dispatchers said Perry called from Franklin, Pickaway and Gallia counties, as well as Virginia and North Carolina.

"I just received a 911 call from a male. He told me that he shot somebody. Um, it was his ex-girlfriend and he shot her in Westerville near Kroger, that's all he told me. Told me he wants to turn himself in, but he's not going to turn himself in unarmed," a dispatcher said.

Blendon Township police said Perry was arrested early Wednesday morning in Concord, North Carolina, which is about a seven and a half hour drive from Columbus.

According to police, Perry told dispatchers that he told his child's mother on the phone that he would not go back to jail and that he would rather be shot by police. He also told dispatchers he had multiple rifles in his truck.

Police learned he had a suspended concealed carry weapons permit out of Madison County.

Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford said surveillance cameras from Kroger captured part of the crime.

More surveillance cameras inside a Hot Head Burrito show two officers waiting in line to get their food when they ran out of the business after hearing a call about a shooting in the Kroger parking lot, several feet from where they were standing.

"They ran out of the door in 30 seconds. They didn't let the person on their thing finish speaking while they were running. They heard it and said 'we got to go bye'" said Fatha Omar, the owner of the restaurant.

Police said when officers found Jones, they immediately began providing CPR.

Police have not released a motive behind the shooting.
