Student arrested after allegedly making shooting threat toward Mansfield high school

School leaders decided to cancel classes at the high school on Friday and move the football game to Rocky River High School.

MANSFIELD, Ohio — A high school student was arrested for allegedly threatening to “shoot up” his school, according to the Mansfield Police Department.

On Thursday, police were notified of a possible shooting threat made toward Mansfield Sr. High School. After looking into leads, officers identified the student who reportedly made the threat and took him into custody.

According to police, the student admitted to making the threat but said that it was in retaliation for a comment made about him by another student. The student also said that he had no intention of committing the act.

Charges will be forthcoming in connection with the incident, police said.

Officers investigated another set of threats to “shoot up” a football game at Arlin Field but could not validate them as being credible.

“It should also be mentioned that it was the student’s diligence and willingness to assist in bringing these threats to light. Because of that officers were able to respond as quickly as they did. Again, anyone who hears or sees threats or potentially violent activity, please call your local Law enforcement agency immediately,” said Mansfield Police Chief Keith Porch.

School leaders decided to cancel classes at the high school on Friday and move the football game to Rocky River High School. Mansfield police said officers will be present at the game.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association and both school districts made the decision that fans from either side will not be permitted at the football game.

"As a result of this new information and to ensure maximum caution and safety, tonight’s OHSAA football game between Rocky River High School and Mansfield Senior High will be played at RRHS Stadium with no fans in attendance," Rocky River school officials said in a statement. "Only football players, cheerleaders, members of the marching band, directors, advisors, coaches, and needed staff will be permitted into Rocky River High School stadium. RRPD and Mansfield Police will be in attendance to provide security."
