Police: 17-year-old boy fatally shot in road rage incident at southwest Columbus gas station; suspect arrested

Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert credited an anonymous caller and a police dispatcher with catching the suspected shooter.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 17-year-old boy is dead and a man was arrested after a shooting at a southwest Columbus gas station that stemmed from a road rage incident Tuesday evening, police say.

The Columbus Division of Police has charged 30-year-old Skyler Burley with the murder of 17-year-old Gage Anderson.

Officers were called to the United Dairy Farmers gas station at 3535 Clime Rd. around 8:15 p.m. for a reported shooting. When they arrived, officers found Anderson unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:40 p.m.

Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said about 10 minutes after the shooting, police got an anonymous call from the 3800 block of Linward Road, which is less than a mile from the shooting scene.

The caller said they witnessed a male, later identified by police as Burley, driving a black Kia pull up to a residence on Linward Road and he was acting suspiciously, adding that he was concerned with a police helicopter that was flying overhead. He reportedly went into the residence but quickly came out and got into a gold SUV.

A Columbus dispatcher believed the shooting and what the anonymous caller witnessed were related. Albert said the dispatcher aired that information to officers and the helicopter in the area.

The helicopter was able to quickly find the SUV leaving the area. Albert said the driver didn't stop for officers for a short amount of time, but stopped on Linward Road. Burley allegedly got out and ran, but officers were able to take him into custody.

Albert credited the anonymous caller and the dispatcher with catching the suspected shooter.

"This was a quick ending to this incident. We were able to solve this pretty quickly because of that anonymous caller," Albert said.

Police say the shooting stems from a road rage incident and the two involved did not know each other.

Anyone with information is asked to call Columbus Police Det. Stevens at 614-645-3750, the homicide unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477 (TIPS).
