Marion County man sentenced to at least 50 years for kidnapping, raping woman

Shane Hooper pleaded guilty to multiple felonies, including kidnapping, rape and strangulation.

MARION, Ohio — A Marion County man was sentenced for kidnapping, torturing and raping a woman last year.

According to Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan, 36-year-old Shane Hooper pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of felonious assault and one count of strangulation.

Between May and June 2023, Hooper detained a woman at her house. Over several days, Hooper physically abused the woman, resulting in broken bones, open wounds and eight fractured ribs. He used a baseball bat and metal chain to abuse her. Hooper nailed doors and windows shut to prevent her from escaping. In addition to the physical abuse, Hooper threatened to kill her and her family.

Hooper was caught when Grogan said he tried to move the victim to another location on Silver Street in Marion, but people noticed her distress and called law enforcement. The Marion County Sheriff's Office took him into custody.

Hooper was sentenced to 50 to 55.5 years.
