Records: Man enters Columbus home with mutilated rabbit, growling at family

Derl Honacher stole the rabbit from a neighbor earlier in the day, according to court records.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man accused of leaving a mutilated rabbit inside a home he broke into and growling at a mother and daughter was arrested in west Columbus.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, a woman said 50-year-old Derl Honacher entered her home in the 3500 block of Plainview Drive on Feb. 11. The woman said Honacher then broke a window and began "acting crazy."

Court documents say Honacher left a mutilated rabbit, which was stolen from a neighbor earlier in the day, inside her home. Detectives said he stole two rabbits, but officials only found one.

"It appeared he had been eating off of that rabbit for quite some time," said Detective Joe Mullins.

The woman and her daughter then ran to a neighbor's home. Honacher allegedly broke the front window of the neighbor's home and entered.

The woman, daughter and neighbor were barricaded in a bedroom with five other children when Honacher started making growling noises and struck the door, court records say.

Franklin Township Police officers arrived on scene and arrested Honacher, who was armed with a knife, after he jumped from a window, according to court documents.

Officers used a Taser on Honacher and took him into custody.

Honacher is charged with one count of aggravated burglary and one count of burglary.
