COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Delaware County judge sentenced an 18-year-old man to life in prison Monday for the shooting death of another man earlier this year.
The shooting happened on March 8. Delaware police were called to Ross Street where officers found 38-year-old Alonzo Byrd lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He died from his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Police arrested Rayshawn Anderson, who was 17 at the time of the shooting. Authorities say Anderson shot Byrd five times in the middle of the road.
Complaints were filed in juvenile court, but he was later transferred to Delaware County Common Pleas Court to be tried as an adult.
After a seven-day trial, a jury found Anderson guilty on two counts of murder with firearm specifications and one count of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises.
“The life of Alonzo Byrd mattered. We are proud to stand up for all victims and hold individuals like Anderson accountable no matter their age.” Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Schiffel said at the time of Anderson’s conviction.
He will be eligible for parole after 27 years.
