COLUMBUS, Ohio — A shooting near the Ohio State University campus is causing some students to worry about safety.
The shooting happened near North High Street and East 11th Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police said they believe the shooting was an altercation between two groups of young people. Those suspects are still on the run.
Assistant Police Chief Greg Bodker said they have photos and videos of the suspects that they will be soon releasing to the public. The assistant chief had a strong message for the people out there who are responsible for the shooting.
“Anyone involved last night you should know, I’m confident, we will identify you. So, it’s in your best interest to stop down by Columbus police headquarters unarmed, and let officers know you have information. Either you can come down and voluntarily talk with us or we will identify you,” said the assistant chief.
Where the shooting happened on North High Street and East 11th Avenue is a very busy area near campus. There are several restaurants, shops and the bookstore.
The Ohio State University students 10TV spoke with said they are worried about safety, but also feel like it’s becoming more normal to hear about crime in the area.
“I know a lot of people had an exam last night, and they showed up to the exam after the shooting had happening. Then, the professor was like ‘Oh, its canceled’ and they had to walk through the crime scene to get to the exam,” said Komal Dhillon, a junior at Ohio State.
“We live on 9th, so my roommates heard the gunshots, that’s how I heard about it,” said Becky Ram, junior at Ohio State.
“I got the updates (from the University), friends were texting in group chats like ‘Are you OK?’ type deal. I think the police presence is I guess enough, but they can’t be everywhere at once,” said Adam Washington, a senior at Ohio State.
Police said they will be making changes to reassure security on and off campus. The Columbus Division of Police said there will be more bike and walk patrol on campus and off campus. There will be added security Friday through Sunday.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477 or the the Felony Assault Unit at 614-645-4141.
