Police: Man charged after firing shots from inside Dublin apartment

An adjacent apartment and a vehicle passing the area were struck by gunfire. No one was injured.

DUBLIN, Ohio — A man was charged after police said he fired multiple shots from inside an apartment in the Bridge Park area Monday evening.

Blake McMurtrey is charged with improperly discharging into a habitation and felony discharge of a firearm on or near a public road.

Records from the Franklin County Municipal Court state that just before 6:35 p.m., McMurtrey told a dispatcher that there were three men in his apartment whom he didn’t know.

McMurtrey was heard in the background telling someone to put their hands up and asking who they were. Dispatchers then heard multiple gunshots over the phone.

McMurtrey admitted to the dispatcher that he was the one with the gun and was “shooting at the men in his apartment.” Court records stated that he continued to talk as if there were other people in the room, but the dispatcher did not hear other voices.

The dispatcher advised McMurtrey to put his gun away and that she’d stay on the phone with him until officers contacted him.

Dublin police arrived and called McMurtrey out to the hall where they handcuffed him. Officers checked the apartment for other people, but no one else was found.

Detectives found that a 2022 Subaru Ascent traveling on Longshore Street was struck by a bullet near the intersection of Bridge Park Drive during the incident. Three people, including a child, were inside the vehicle and none of them were injured.

Detectives also found that two rounds went through McMurtrey’s apartment wall and into an adjacent apartment where two adults and their two children lived. They were not injured.

McMurtrey is currently being held in the Franklin County Correction Center and was given a $100,000 bond.

Police said the public is safe but officers are in the area investigating.
