COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than two dozen cars were broken into early Thursday morning near the Ohio State University's campus.
Sgt. Joe Albert with the Columbus Division of Police said officers were dispatched around 1:23 a.m. for a report of someone breaking car windows on West 8th Avenue. Officers also found vehicles vandalized on Highland Street and Hunter Avenue as well.
When officers arrived, they witnessed three people running from the scene. The officers chased and caught one of the suspects, a 17-year-old boy. Albert said he had two felony warrants out for his arrest for previous property crimes.
About 26 vehicles were broken into. Albert said the suspects would break the windows and go through the vehicles. It's unclear if any property has been stolen.
The 17-year-old will be charged and sent to juvenile detention, Albert said. Officers with Ohio State assisted Columbus police in this case.
This is the second time in less than a week that dozens of vehicles were vandalized in Columbus.
From Sunday night into Monday morning, more than 40 vehicles parked in the Short North had their windows broken out, according to Columbus police. Most of the cars had either the front passenger window or driver’s side window smashed in, the report says.
Albert said police will check with residents who have doorbell surveillance cameras in an attempt to identify the other two suspects involved in Thursday morning's vandalism.
