Bodycam video shows Colorado police officer on kids bike chasing down fleeing suspect

The suspect tried to flee police on a kid's motorized scooter, so the officer borrowed a kid's bike to chase them down, Lone Tree Police said.

LONE TREE, Colo. — Residents of a Lone Tree neighborhood were treated to a strange sight last week when a police officer raced past on a kids bike in hot pursuit of a theft suspect on a motorized scooter.

The two-wheeled pursuit happened Saturday afternoon in the Acres Green neighborhood when Lone Tree Police officers were trying to arrest a suspect in a felony theft, according to the police department. The suspect was accused of stealing a carful of merchandise from Kohl's, located at 8660 S. Quebec St.

The suspect ran from officers, jumped a couple of fences and then came across a faster means of transportation than his feet.

"Just took a scooter," says Lone Tree Police Officer Jacob Tarr, in body camera video provided by police. "He's on the road."

Tarr was chasing the suspect on foot. He jumped a fence, came across a kid's bike next to a house and didn't hesitate. He jumped on the bike and took off in pursuit of the suspect.

"Did you see a guy on a scooter?" he asked residents as he pedaled past.

As it turns out, a Lone Tree officer in a vehicle first caught up with the suspect. The bodycam video shows Tarr ride up to where his fellow officer had the suspect in custody.

"[Didn't think] we were gonna catch you, were we, huh?" Tarr said as he rode up.

The officers determined that the suspect also had three warrants in Adams County, Douglas County and Denver, police said. The suspect was booked into the Douglas County jail on suspicion of obstruction and two counts of theft.

As for the bike and scooter, they were both returned to their rightful owners, police said.
