HOUSTON — An 18-year-old woman is facing a felony charge after authorities said she abandoned her newborn son at a dumpster behind an apartment complex last weekend.
During a court appearance on Monday, Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam said she did what she did because she didn't want her boyfriend to break up with her.
Cux-Ajtzalam is charged with abandoning a child without the intent to return.
The discovery was made Sunday when witnesses heard a baby crying and called 911.
When officers arrived, they found the newborn baby boy in a tied-up plastic bag near a dumpster along Dashwood Drive in southwest Houston.
Authorities said the child had been born the same day he was found.
They also said Cux-Ajtzalam told them she left him and went home with no intentions of returning to get him.
"It was pure luck that the child was found and received care," the magistrate judge said during the appearance.
A magistrate judge said Cux-Ajtzalam had lived in Houston for more than two years.
Her bond was initially set at $90,000 and authorities also said she has an immigration hold. On Monday, a judge raised her bond to $200,000. She's facing up to 10 years in prison.
