'My son is gone': Mother of West Jefferson shooting victim demands justice for his death

Leon Daniel was one of four people who was found shot and killed at a West Jefferson apartment on Monday evening.

WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio — West Jefferson police said they still do not know who shot and killed four people who were found Monday evening at an apartment on Jackson Street.

The family of Leon Daniel, who was one of the four victims, said they want someone to be held accountable for the tragedy that happened.

Police responded to a 911 call from a passerby Monday around 5:30 p.m. about a man lying outside the apartment with a possible gunshot wound.

Officers found the man and pronounced him dead at the scene. Officials found three additional victims who were all pronounced dead as well.

Daniel's family said are also thinking about the other families involved, and that they are holding them in their thoughts and prayers.

“He told me he loved me, and I told him I loved him, not knowing it was the last time I would see him,” said JoAnna McNeal, Daniel’s mother.

Tears rolled down McNeal's face as she remembers the last conversation she had with her son, the day before Daniel and the others were killed.

“My son is gone. He was my baby. All I have is a picture. He will always be in my heart,” McNeal said.

McNeal said her son wasn't perfect. Daniel spent time in prison, but she said he was friendly, a great singer and loved being a dad to his two kids.

“He had a great heart. He just loved and wanted to help anyone,” she explained.

Daniel was living with his uncle, Dale McNeal, who says they now know all too well the pain so many other families are feeling.

“We understand even more intensely now that small communities are not immune,” Dale said.

The West Jefferson police are working on the case, and are looking through video in hopes of finding answers.

“Oh, it would mean the world. It would mean the world because whoever did this, they will be punished, and not only by the people, the authority but by God,” McNeal said.

Daniel's funeral will be held on June 2.

West Jefferson police are leading the investigation with help from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
