COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 28-year-old Columbus man who assaulted the mother of his child and injured his 3-month-old son pleaded guilty and was sentenced to jail.
Marqual Wilkins pleaded guilty to all charges, including domestic violence, assault and violating a protection order, according to City Attorney Zach Klein's Office. He was sentenced to 285 days in jail, credited with the 85 days he's done, and three years probation.
In November 2021, Wilkins reportedly strangled, punched, threw the woman to the ground and kicked her. She was taken to the emergency room with injuries to her mouth and knee.
Following the incident, she had charges approved through the city attorney's domestic violence and stalking unit. Almost a year later, Wilkins violated a protection order obtained by the woman twice.
Days later, Wilkins again violently assaulted the woman and infant.
According to Klein's office, Wilkins punched the woman in the eye while she was holding the child. She fell to the ground and when she fell, the child hit his head.
She sustained an orbital fracture and the boy had a brain bleed, the release says.
“City Prosecutors are working tirelessly to get domestic abusers off the streets and behind bars. Victims and their families deserve justice and the safety and peace of mind knowing their abuser is being held accountable,” said Klein. “I’m thankful for the incredible lengths our Domestic Violence and Stalking Unit will go to deliver justice and provide support to victims, and this case exemplifies that dedication.”
