Man fatally shot by Mansfield police was in standoff with Columbus police earlier this year

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting in Mansfield.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man who was involved in a standoff with police on a Columbus highway earlier this year was shot and killed by police in Mansfield over the weekend.

On Saturday, Mansfield police officers were called to a residence on Cline Avenue for a reported domestic violence incident.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man, identified as Michael S. Oswalt II, with a knife at the door, police said.

Oswalt went back into the home, which was occupied by his girlfriend and her two small children. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

During negotiations, Oswalt released the two children from the home. Later on, the victim tried to escape Oswalt, who allegedly chased her with the knife as she ran out the back door. Police said they attempted to use "less lethal munitions" to stop Oswalt, but they did not work and officers fatally shot him.

In August, Columbus police responded to a crash on Interstate 70 over state Route 315. At the time, police said the driver of a work truck with a snowplow attached to the front refused to get out of the vehicle following the crash and began throwing construction tools at officers when they arrived.

The driver was identified as Oswalt and he was taken into custody. Oswalt was charged with assault on a police officer.

Columbus police confirmed Tuesday night the person shot and killed by Mansfield police is the same person in the August standoff in Columbus.
