COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man convicted of murder and attempted murder in a shooting in the South Franklinton neighborhood three years ago was sentenced to life in prison.

Datwain Crudup was found guilty on Aug. 20 of seven charges, including four counts of murder and one count each of attempted murder, felonious assault and having a weapon under a disability.

The charges stemmed from the shooting on April 3, 2021, where Kevin Williams and Nickolas Cowans died and another man was shot.

The Franklin County Prosecutor's Office said the victims were gathered outside an apartment complex on Eaton Avenue when Crudup and another person ambushed the men. Williams and Cowans were shot and killed and the third victim was wounded.

Crudup left the area after the shooting and was arrested in California on Dec. 21, 2021. The prosecutor’s office said he was on parole at the time of the murders.

Crudup will be eligible for parole after serving 46 years in prison.
