PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — A Portsmouth man was arrested and charged with allegedly shooting a deputy Saturday evening, according to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy was responding to a call of a man threatening someone with a firearm around 10:40 p.m.
The sheriff’s office says the deputy arrived at a home on Liberty Avenue attempting to make contact with the residents inside when a man immediately shot the deputy.
The deputy notified dispatch that he had been shot and medics were sent to the scene along with additional law enforcement from the sheriff's office, Portsmouth police, Ohio State Highway Patrol and New Boston police.
The injured deputy was flown to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and was treated and released. The sheriff’s office says he will require further medical treatment for his injuries.
Deputies were told that the suspect was believed to have left the home after the shooting, but it was not certain at the time.
A drone was used to clear the residence and look for the suspect. The sheriff’s office says the drone was able to check most of the residence, but the SWAT team had to enter the home to clear the rest of it.
The suspect was not found in the home.
Around the same time the home was being searched, authorities learned that the suspect contacted someone asking for help in leaving the area.
The suspect was going to meet the person at the Wheelersburg baseball field on Dogwood Ridge. Authorities immediately set up surveillance of the area and deputies were advised the man would be armed with an AR-style weapon with multiple magazines and two handguns.
SWAT attempted to find the suspect using a drone and thermal imaging, but it was unsuccessful and a manual check of the field had to be done.
The man was found in a restroom and a negotiator was able to talk him into surrendering, authorities said.
Michael Bishop, 39, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of having weapons under disability, tampering with evidence, inducing panic and obstructing official business.
He is being held at the Scioto County Jail and will have his first court appearance on Sept. 16.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 740-351-1091.
