COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man who is accused of stabbing a Mifflin Township police officer in the head last month is now being held at the Franklin County Corrections Center without bond.
Bryan Benjamin, 36, was originally held on a $500,000 bond when he was arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court on Feb. 20 for felonious assault.
A bond hearing was then held on Tuesday and the prosecutor’s office said he is now being held without bond. The prosecutor's office did not provide a reason why it was changed.
Benjamin’s charge comes from an incident on Perdue Avenue, near East Linden, Sunday evening.
Officers were called to the area on a report of a suspicious person. When an officer arrived, he made contact with Benjamin and attempted to detain him.
Records say that Benjamin resisted arrest and stabbed the officer in the head multiple times with a homemade knife, causing serious injuries.
The officer who was stabbed is expected to survive.
Body camera video shows Benjamin being taken into custody after the alleged stabbing with a knife still in his hand.
A neighbor who lives near Perdue Avenue told 10TV that he and another neighbor went to help a man they believed was stranded to jump start his car. He added that the man, later identified as Benjamin, was acting erratically and suspiciously so he called 911.
According to court records, Benjamin had a warrant out of Mansfield for resisting arrest and criminal trespassing from 2021. He was previously charged with resisting arrest and assault in Mansfield which were later dismissed. He was also charged with resisting arrest and assault in Franklin County which was also dismissed.
