COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 14-year-old homicide suspect who was on the run for weeks had his first day in court on Wednesday after being taken into custody.

Michael McCurdy was scheduled to be in juvenile court for a preliminary hearing on murder charges.

According to court documents, McCurdy is accused of shooting and killing 15-year-old Unique Prater. She was found shot in the 1200 block of Atcheson Road on Dec. 31.

McCurdy did not appear in court on Wednesday but the magistrate ordered him to remain in detention.

10TV usually does not name juveniles or show their mugshots, but we are naming McCurdy and showing his face because he is charged with murder.

CrimeTracker 10 obtained McCurdy's juvenile record. Even at the age of 14, he has faced dozens of charges dating back to 2021, including assault, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and failure to comply with the court's order of wearing a GPS ankle monitor.

McCurdy, who also goes by "Mike Mike," was first taken into custody on Dec. 27. The Columbus Division of Police says he and two other teens, one of whom was wanted for the homicide of a 16-year-old girl, flashed a gun at a SWAT team.

A SWAT team member fired a shot at the group of teens, but no one was struck. McCurdy was taken into custody and released. Four days later, Prater's body was found.

On Jan. 13, police believe McCurdy and another teen led several law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase. Both teens got away.

Thursday morning, a Columbus police SWAT team took McCurdy into custody on the city's southeast side without incident.

McCurdy is scheduled to be back in court next week.
