COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County grand jury indicted a Columbus man for aggravated murder and other charges in connection with a homicide investigation on the city’s southeast side in January.
Mark Denny was arrested by the Columbus Division of Police shortly after he was indicted on Thursday. He is also charged with murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
Police did not provide further details about his alleged role in the homicide investigation from Jan. 28, but the charges stem from the death of 23-year-old Deangelo Williams Jr. He is the second suspect to be charged in the incident.
Officers were called to the 2400 block of Kimberly Parkway for a complaint and found Williams unresponsive inside a vehicle.
Police said he had crashed into several vehicles and, after further investigation, learned that he had been shot. He died at a hospital the next day.
According to court documents, detectives learned that 22-year-old Leon Mason was in the vehicle with Williams and shot him.
Court documents say video of the shooting identified a suspect matching the physical size of Mason but was not able to see his face. Mason told investigators he was at his home in Whitehall. Court documents say cellphone records show movement of his phone consistent with driving to the scene, being at the scene at the time of the shooting and driving away back to his residence after the shooting.
Video footage also shows a white Ford Mustang, later determined to be owned by a friend of Mason, driving away without lights on. The video is consistent with the times of Mason's phone, records say.
Mason was indicted in March for aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder and domestic violence. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
