Grand jury declines to indict Columbus police officers involved in 2023 shootout on I-70

After responding to an armed bank robbery on Hilliard Rome Road, officers were involved in a pursuit with three suspects in a stolen Porsche.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County grand jury voted Friday not to indict eight Columbus Division of Police officers in the shooting death of a man following an armed robbery and pursuit last summer, according to Prosecuting Attorney Gary Tyack.

On July 6, 2023, Columbus officers responded to an armed bank robbery on Hilliard Rome Road. Upon arrival, officers located a stolen Porsche traveling at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle eventually crashed on Interstate 70 near the Mount Street exit, with two suspects running from the scene.

According to the prosecutor's office, investigators determined that 19-year-old Abdisamad Ismail got out of the vehicle and started firing a gun, hitting an officer three times. Eight responding officers returned fire, hitting Ismail "numerous times."

Medics pronounced Ismail dead at the scene. The officer survived his injuries.

The two suspects who fled the scene, 20-year-old Aden Abdullahi Jama and 23-year-old Faisal Darod, were later arrested and are facing several federal charges.
