GAHANNA, Ohio — The Gahanna Division of Police arrested a man suspected in a road rage shooting that injured a father and his 1-year-old child on Interstate 270 last year.
Rickey Hill, 19, was charged with two counts of felonious assault in connection with the shooting on Aug. 17, 2023.
Officers arrived on I-270 near Broad Street and Hamilton Road where they found a 25-year-old man critically injured and his child who was shot in the leg, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.
The father and child were taken to the hospital and have since recovered from their injuries.
On Oct. 5, 2023, an officer stopped a silver 2014 Ford Fiesta for a speed violation. The driver, who was identified as Hill, did not have a valid driver’s license.
Officers searched the vehicle and they found a loaded Glock 26 9 mm handgun under the driver’s seat, according to court records. Police said Hill was not legally permitted to have a loaded firearm and was arrested for improper handling of a firearm.
Detectives noticed similarities between the vehicle Hill was driving and the suspect vehicle from the road rage incident while reviewing the arrest report. Hill also had similar facial distinctions to what was described for the shooting suspect, police said.
Detectives submitted the handgun to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for analysis. Lab results confirmed that one of the projectiles recovered from the shooting came from the handgun found in Hill’s vehicle.
On Feb. 29, Hill was arrested by the Gahanna police SWAT team without incident. He was taken to the Franklin County Corrections Center.
Hill is scheduled to be arraigned at Franklin County Municipal Court on Saturday.
