FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — The Franklin County Sheriff's Office released dash and body camera video showing the moments leading up to a deadly crash involving a stolen Kia last month.
The crash happened on Nov. 25 in the area of Hilliard-Rome and Beacon Hill roads in Prairie Township.
Investigators said a 15-year-old was driving a Kia Optima with three other juveniles inside when they ran a stop sign and crashed into a Honda Civic. The driver of the Honda, identified by the family as 36-year-old Matthew Moshi, died days after the crash.
Chief Deputy Jim Gilbert provided an update along with the video on Tuesday. Gilbert said deputies received a call about a stolen Kia Optima in the area of 500 Daytona Road around 8:30 a.m. A neighbor's doorbell camera showed a stolen Kia Soul in the area just before 5 a.m. One person got out of the Soul, broke one of the windows on the Optima and stole it.
Just before 1:30 p.m., a deputy sitting at a stoplight in the area of West Broad Street and Old Village Road spotted the stolen Optima. The deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over on Beacon Hill Road but it started speeding away. Less than a minute later, the driver of the Optima ran a stop sign and crashed into the Honda.
Body camera video shows one juvenile get out of the Optima and tried to run away. Deputies quickly took them into custody. Three more juveniles, including the 15-year-old driver, were also taken into custody.
The body cam video shows deputies attempting to get the driver of the Honda out of the vehicle to provide medical assistance. Gilbert said the driver had no pulse at first, but started life-saving measures before being taken to the hospital.
Gilbert said the 15-year-old driver is still in custody at a juvenile detention center and is being held on a receiving stolen property charge. The sheriff's office is asking the Franklin County Sheriff's Office for the "appropriate charges" against the teenage driver.
The other three juveniles in the stolen car have not been charged, according to Gilbert.
