WASHINGTON — The family of a man found shot to death near the Catholic University campus say he was working as a food delivery driver to support his wife, seven children and parents back in Venezuela.
"Everyone is heartbroken," said Robert Munoz. "We can't believe it. Our mother is in shock. She's older, she can't handle the news."
Munoz's brother, 38-year-old Ruben Jesus Munoz Romero was found shot just before 8 p.m. Monday near Catholic University.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the area near Catholic University after witnesses saw Romero fall off his moped.
Investigators believe Romero was shot in another location and continued driving on his moped while wounded. His family says he called his wife in his last moments and she was able to get his location to family in Maryland. He was unconscious and not breathing when help reached him and pronounced dead shortly afterward.
"He called his wife in Venezuela, she was the one who called us [in Maryland] and we got his location and we found him there, lying on the ground," said Munoz.
Romero's family says he was making food deliveries when he was shot. Robert Munoz says his brother was a hard worker who supported his wife, seven children and their parents in Venezuela.
"I love him so much with all my heart," said Munoz. "I wish I was there with him in his last moments. We were always together."
As the family searches for answers, police continue the search for who killed Romero. No suspect description has been released at this time.
"I'm angry," said Munoz. "I don't know what to do. I want answers. I want justice."
