Police Say Shooting Death Of Teenager Was Random, Senseless

Central Ohio residents weigh in on the impact of deadly shootings in their neighborhoods. Get the story.

Police were searching for the person responsible for a deadly shooting on Saturday.

Police said the shooting occurred along Ontario Street and East 24th Avenue, at about 6:15 p.m.

The victim, Gerald Holland, 18, died a short time later at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.

Holland's cousin said the shooting happened after an argument between four or five men.

"He's gone. There's nothing I can do. I mean, I'm 18. He isn't even going to get to see 21," Holland's cousin, George Garrett, said. "So, it just makes me look at my life, like I have to do something better than what I'm doing."

Police were searching for the shooter. A description was not immediately available.

"What I'm asking is for the citizens of Columbus to be as enraged about this as I am," Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Chris Holzhauser said.

The shooting marks the latest in a string of deadly violence involving teenagers and guns.

On Saturday, a 17-year-old girl died after being shot on Thursday in a car in north Columbus. Police said that the shooting stemmed from an argument.

"I mean, it's crazy. People are shooting each other every day for no reason. What's the point?" said neighbor Toya Patilla. "We all are here to keep each other safe. Everybody needs to keep each other safe."

Days earlier, on Thursday, a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed inside a home in Clintonville. That shooting was considered accidental.

"I care because it could be somebody's child. I know their parents, or whoever, has to be hurt," said neighbor Adalia Alexander.
