Police ID Man Killed In East Side Shooting

Police are working to piece together the events leading to a man’s shooting death. Get the latest.

A man was found dead east of downtown Columbus Friday morning.

Detectives said that 24-year-old Nicholas Thompson was found shot to death inside a building along the 100 block of Clifton Court.

Police said that they received reports of shots fired around 3 a.m. Once on the scene, authorities discovered Thompson shot multiple times.

Investigators said that the building was secured and that they had to force their way inside.

Once inside, investigators made a discovery that would change Dwan Fitzgerald’s world forever.

Fitzgerald, Thompson’s mother, was struggling to cope with the loss.

“He was everything to me, everything, everything,” Fitzgerald said. “He was my first child.”

Tito Ramirez lives on the first floor of the building. He made a call to police he would never forget.

“I hear five shots in a row, then five more out back,” Ramirez said. “I open the door, you see a young black man in front of me dead.”

While police have not said what led to the shooting, one thing that had left family members puzzled is what brought Thompson to the apartment building in the first place.

Crime scene technicians were working to gather evidence. No arrests were immediately made.
