The Ohio Department of Natural resources says someone poisoned 50 ducks and geese at a Northwest Columbus apartment complex pond at the end of January.
There are just a few geese left around the ponds at the Island Club Apartments off of Bethel Road.
"It makes me very sad," said resident Tami Krueger.
Sad, because dozens of others were discovered dead and scattered around the water back in January. Wildlife officials said the birds ingested poison that was thrown out like bird seed.
"We live on the pond and saw it happening over a two to three day period," said Krueger.
It's a mystery to residents and a serious loss.
"We loved the ducks and the geese. They were a lot of fun to watch," said resident Richard Martin.
"The ducks used to come to my patio and I would feed them," said Krueger.
The ODNR says corn feed mixed with pellets was intentionally thrown around the pond. The pellets turned out to be a combination of poisons. The birds are protected under state and federal statutes. Killing them is illegal and in the eyes of the residents, it's downright inhumane.
"Somebody knows what happened, somebody knows," said Martin.
The ODNR welcomes any information in this case that can help them figure out who did this. Their tip hotline is 1-800-POACHER.
