DEA says nearly all tested drugs contain fentanyl

Fentanyl is a cheaper synthetic, more potent pain reliever. It's 50 times more potent than heroin, and 100 times more potent than morphine.

Investigators are still trying to find out how suspected fentanyl got into Madison Correctional Institution last week.

Two Inmates and a staff member were treated and released after they were exposed to it at the facility.

At the Drug Enforcement Administration laboratory in Chicago, more than 10 percent of the drugs they test is heroin. They are seeing more and more fentanyl.

“We are just inundated in this lab with fentanyl and carfentanyl,” said the director of the lab, Melanie Domagala.

Fentanyl is a cheaper synthetic, more potent pain reliever. It's 50 times more potent than heroin, and 100 times more potent than morphine. In the past 6 years, the lab went from seeing almost no fentanyl, to seeing it included in many drugs they test.

In September, the Franklin County Coroner sent a warning after 10 people died in just over 24 hours.

She said that was an unusually high number and added that fentanyl can be mixed with cocaine and methamphetamine in deadly combinations for those who are using.

“it's very dangerous because it can kill you,” Domagala said.

The director of the lab says the real danger of the drugs on the street, is there's no quality control. One of the forensic chemists says about 50% of the heroin she sees is laced with fentanyl.

They explain by adding fentanyl to other drugs it increases the amount of the drug while giving it a bigger punch.
